Bulldogs Breeders - History of the Breed

Bulldogs appeared in the 16th century, but became especially popular during the 17th and 18th century. Their original aim was to help butchers herd and drive bulls to the market. Then Bulldogs were exploited in the cruel sport of bull and bear baiting. The ability of this breed to endure pain is very helpful in such activity. In 1835 baiting and dogfights became illegal in England and Bulldogs almost lost their popularity.

In the middle of the 19th century, the era of dog shows began and this breed was saved from oblivion. Breeders tried to preserve the fine characteristics of the breed and to eliminate viciousness and aggressiveness. Nowadays Bulldogs are very friendly and tolerant to children. This breed is a symbol of England; its tenacity and hardiness represent the English spirit.

Bulldogs Breeders - Temperament of the Breed

Bulldogs should be kind and equable, courageous and resolute. They are often described as dignified and pacific. Their appearance suggests power and strength, but unless seriously provoked, these dogs will not attack people and other dogs. To have a docile and trustworthy companion, the owner should know much about the breed and provide the Bulldog with the necessary care. In the wrong hands these dogs often become too aggressive or timid; they may be stubborn and difficult to control. Early socialization and proper training are crucial for all Bulldogs.
