These dogs originated in old times, and their predecessors were used for fighting with bulls. Those were Mastiff-type dogs, that had very strong mandibles, flat heads and powerful body. Breeders cultivated these features throughout the entire history of bull baiting, which existed until 1835. Their modern descendants are not as wild and vicious, and they are mostly raised as pets. However, the American variety is known for its high level of intelligence, self-assured temperament and agility. It is more active than its English and French counterparts.
