These dogs have compact and strong bodies. The head is large in proportion to the rest of the body, but it should not be as big or heavy as to drag along the ground in motion. Broad heads, strong jaws and wrinkly muzzles protected their ancestors in bull baiting contests. Nowadays, these dogs have lost their ferocious temperament, and they are good for apartment life. They can make excellent companions for children and elderly people. These animals cannot withstand high temperatures, and are prone to hip dysplasia, which is a genetic disease.

Modern dogs of this breed differ much from their ancestors. The original aggression of these fierce fighters is no longer encouraged; breeding programs aim at temperament and health of the dogs. Working abilities are less important than good health and friendly personality, because these dogs are used as pets and family companions. Only American variety of the breed is still used for hunting small game. It’s the duty of the owners to train and exercise these dogs regularly and keep them in a good form.
